Cleveland Golf’s CG-14 Wedges

5.0 - There is a reason why Cleveland Golf is recognized by many as the clear leader in golf wedge manufacturing. When you hold a Cleveland CG-14 wedge it feels like a natural extension of your body. Whether you are digging yourself out of the weeds, or zeroing in from 90 yards out, the CG-14 is the tool for the job, and they are as forgiving as wedges come.

One of the reasons that the CG-14 is so forgiving are its patented Zip Grooves. Rather than typical grooves, which are rounded from the top of the clubface to the foundation of the groove, the Zip Grooves are square. This provides more surface area, which channels dirt, sand, and debris away from the ball, allowing for cleaner contact. Better contact allows the mid to high-ability player to take advantage of backspin techniques. This also gives a player much more distance control and accuracy when playing out of the rough or sand.

Another patented technology found in the CG-14 wedge is its lightweight Gelback technology. The back of the wedge contains a florescent orange gel insert. This means no more “stingers” on those cold mornings or late-fall afternoon outings. While the Gelback keeps vibration down, it doesn’t take away from the golfer’s feeling of control. You’ll still get feedback from your ball contact; you just won’t grimace in pain over mis-hits when you’re using this club.

Another mentionable feature that makes the CG-14 a great wedge is the width of the sole. Compared to other soles, the CG-14’s is wide, adding to its forgiveness on the course. It also helps the mid to high-ability player hit more advanced shots, and lessens digging on touch shots. The wide sole is vital to the versatility of this club, whether you are hitting a full shot, or taking a shot that requires skill and delicacy near the green, the wide sole improves your ball contact and performance.

While the price of the CG-14 wedge may make you gasp if you’ve never bought an elite set of clubs, generally around $110 per club, you'll find that the advanced technology and performance this club offers makes it worthwhile. The forgiveness provided by the wide sole and Zip Grooves will enhance any golfer's game, and the comfort that the Gelback technology provides will make this your new favorite wedge. Some may argue that it may not be a good club for the beginner, because they won’t recognize the quality that they are holding unless they’ve first dealt with a set of beginner’s clubs.

With its sleek, stainless-steel body, the CG-14 wedge will instill confidence in the player wielding it. While some dislike the look of the Gelback insert, it was barely noticeable to this reviewer, and certainly didn’t detract from the beauty of the club. If a bright and shiny club isn’t your style, the CG-14 black pearl may suit you better. Choose the 56 degree wedge if you find that you consistently need that yard or two of additional length, or if the flop shot is part of your repertoire the 60 degree wedge will enhance your already perfected shot.

The CG-14s come in 46, 48, 50, 52, 54, 56, 58 and 60-degree models, with standard and low bounce options on the 54 through 60 degree models.
